FLASHBACK

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of ICTP, Highlights periodically includes a description of a seminal event in the Centre's history: 28-29 May 1964 -- The first ICTP Scientific Council, which includes such science luminaries as J. Robert Oppenheimer (director, Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton), Manuel Sandoval-Vallarta (president, UN Atomic Energy Commission) and Victor Weisskopf (director general, CERN), meets at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. In describing its mandate and expectations, the Council states that "it should provide the director of the Centre with a suitable companionship in carrying his burden" and that "hard work, devotion and good luck would enable the Centre to achieve success."
